Tavistock Road gas works among latest Plymouth roadworks (2024)

There will be road closures on a section of Tavistock Road this week. It is one of a number of new roadworks schemes getting under way in the city.

Wales & West Utilities is carrying out work to upgrade the gas pipes in the Tavistock Road area of Plymouth. The work is essential to ensure the gas is kept flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people safe and warm for generations to come.

But while the works take place, there will be a road closure on Tavistock Road, from the junction of Plymbridge Lane to the Mercedes Benz garage. This will be in place on the southbound carriageway only.

Access will be maintained to Plymbridge Lane, the Jack Rabbit pub, the Mercedes Benz garage and Travelodge. A diversion route will be in place, and this will be clearly signposted. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time.

Wales & West Utilities Abby Smith is managing this work and said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.”

Plymouth City Council has helpfully put out a list of roadworks that will be taking place across the city over the next week. The council is responsible for coordinating works carried out by utility companies, developers and other organisations as well as their own repair, maintenance and improvement works.

They maintain all public roads in Plymouth except the A38, which is managed by National Highways on behalf of the Department for Transport.

“We know there's no good time to close roads, especially on busy routes and we do everything we can to co-ordinate planned works and minimise their impact on our transport network,” a City Council spokesman said.
